- Know the Difference: Compostable vs. Biodegradable
While these terms are often used interchangeably, understanding the differences between them is critical, especially when deciding which products to add to your assortment. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) defines biodegradables as anything that undergoes degradation resulting from the action of naturally occurring microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, and algae. The speed in which materials break down is dependent on a variety of factors like sunlight and temperature. Materials do not have to break down within a certain time period to be considered biodegradable. On the other hand, compostable materials break down into compost, a nutrient-rich, reusable substance that can be used as a soil conditioner. The materials will break down in a specific time fame and don’t leave chemical residue behind. It’s worth noting that some materials can break down on their own, but many break down the most effectively in composting facilities. Adding products to your assortment that are 100% compostable, recyclable or reusable is a great way to help your customer reduce their environmental footprint.
