In Canada, you can count on cold weather, and the ice and snow that goes with it! For businesses, this means investing time and resources into keeping walkways clear of snow and ice. Slips and falls are some of the leading causes of injury in the country, and maintaining clear sidewalks and pathways is important to keeping facilities safe. Not only does a poorly maintained walkway leave a bad impression, but it could also become a huge liability for an organization. Read on to find out how to correctly use ice melt and keep your business injury-free.
Ice melt is a compound, usually comprised of salt, used to help prevent ice from forming in cold weather. Here are a few tips to help your customers get the most out of their ice melt this winter:
- Apply before a storm to prevent ice from forming. When more than one inch accumulates, clear snow and reapply. (Ideally, ice melt should be applied to surfaces that have been cleared of snow for maximum efficacy.)
- A little goes a long way! Depending on the amount of ice and snow, you should only need one to four pounds of ice melt per 540 square feet. Any more than this can result in wasted product and is harmful to the environment.
- Don’t use ice melt on porous surfaces like brick, or on concrete that’s less than two years old, as this can result in freeze-thaw damage.
Every year, thousands of people slip or fall because of ice that hasn’t been properly removed. Whether it’s for your business, or your customer’s, a clear walkway is crucial to keeping facilities safe in the winter.
Follow these tips, and the product’s Safety Data Sheet (SDS), to get the most out of ice melt this winter.
